Although health insurance is supposed to be something that defends us when we are sick or require special treatment, quite often it feels more like a hassle that it’s worth. Here’s an example: you go see a physician for a minor problem (say, your eyelid won’t stop twitching). The doctor sends you for some blood work examination (maybe you lack some protein in your blood?) and you think it’s over. Two months later your insurance calls you and says it doesn’t cover such cases, and send you an exorbitant bill. After a thorough investigation, you find out that they they should’ve covered it, but the doctor’s secretary sent the incorrect forms. After a long and lengthy struggle, which lasts for months, this is resolved. The conclusion: unfortunately, unlike some other countries, in the US there is no free medical insurance.
The above example is one of the simplest cases. There are significantly more complicated – and far more serious – problems and issues with health insurance. This becomes even more complex when considering there are many individual health insurance plans for various circumstances. Here is a more complex example: pregnant woman that are uninsured have a very hard time getting insured because insurance providers consider their pregnancy a ‘pre-existing’ condition, and thus, refuse to provide them with the necessary insurance. This not only causes a major unnecessary stress for the pregnant woman (as if she doesn’t have enough to deal with), but actively jeopardizes her life and the life of her baby.
